At this year’s Authentic Athens Marathon, November 10th, 2019, ONEX SYROS SHIPYARDS was a proud sponsor of the participating Marathon Runners from Syros, Greece who ran along with the “Friends of Syros’ History” Club.
Sixteen athletes of all ages represented the island of Syros in this historic race which commemorates the ancient Greek messenger Pheidippides who after the Battle of Marathon (490 BC) ran all the way to Athens (42,195 m) to deliver the news of Athenians’ victory over Persians. In 1896 the Olympic Committee revived the race for the First Modern Olympic Games of Athens and ever since became an official Olympic sport. This year’s Authentic Marathon broke the record of participations with over 60,000 runners from all over the world.
